Where can I get further support beyond the GSCOP book? 5. What are the contents of the GSCOP book? 6. Who is the author of the GSCOP book? 7. What is the GSCOP Aware Association? 1. What is the short background to the GSCOP book? A code of practice was introduced by the UK Government to enable suppliers to fear UK supermarkets less. This code is called ‘GSCOP’ – ‘The Groceries Supply Code of Practice’. Introduced in 2010 the bill was passed to help promote better collaboration between major supermarkets in the UK and their suppliers. Ultimately it protects suppliers better and equalises the balance a little. 2. Who should read the GSCOP book? People that work in the UK Grocery Industry. Specifically Sales Directors, Category Managers, and National Account Managers to major UK supermarkets need to understand the ’rules of the game’ that they play in, because how can they call ’foul play’ if they don’t know the rules? It’s ok not to know the offside rule, unless you are a footballer! The author suggests combining the knowledge of GSCOP with effective negotiation skills and/or influencing with impact skills. Both training courses are available: http://www.makingbusinessmatter.co.uk/about-our-courses/a-list-of-our-courses/ 3. Why has this GSCOP book been written? This book was written to help suppliers in the UK Grocery Industry to understand the Government legislation that was brought-in to protect them. Christine Tacon, the Groceries Code Adjudicator, challenges suppliers to understand the Code, in this 3.5 minute video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oEgPaQtcUw This book is designed to raise awareness of the Code with suppliers, highlight the most important areas for a supplier to consider, and be used as a reference to come back to understand, for example, the rules around ’delisting’ when they need to and be a useful tool for joint business planning. According to the Groceries Code Adjudicator’s 2015 Annual Summary 76% of suppliers have ‘no awareness’ to only a ‘fair awareness’ of GSCOP. 4. Where can I get further support beyond the GSCOP book? The author, see below, is running GSCOP 2-hour Masterclasses for up to 12 people for £750 (£62.50 per person). Each attendee also receives a copy of this book. Further details can be found: http://www.makingbusinessmatter.co.uk/training-courses/gscop-masterclass/ Ideal for suppliers in the UK Grocery Industry. 5. What is the content of the GSCOP book? You can download a free chapter of the book: http://www.makingbusinessmatter.co.uk/course-resources/a-complete-understanding-of-the-groceries-supply-code-of-practice-gscop/ 6. Who is the author of the GSCOP book? Darren A. Smith’s career is a game of two halves. He spent the first 12 years of his career as a Buyer, Trading Manager and Category Manager at one of the big four UK supermarkets. During that time he managed buying teams, managed chilled ready meals, frozen foods, and fruit with his last responsibility being worth £1bn. In 2002 he chose to leave the corporate world but stay in the UK Grocery Industry and founded Making Business Matter (MBM). A training provider that specialises in working with suppliers to the big 4 Supermarkets on ‘softer skills’ to help them secure more profitable wins. For example, their Category Management Training Academy, negotiation Skills training course, and Time Management training course. 7. What is the GSCOP Aware Association? A means of helping suppliers to work with supermarkets honestly, openly, and collaboratively by declaring that they understand GSCOP.
